SPANISH RAPIER In the Spanish Golden Age there were two main fencing schools: La Verdadera Destreza (True Destreza) y la Destreza Vulgar (Common Destreza). Both of them were well structured fencing schools built with different philosophy and techniques. As the rapiers became lighter the Common Destreza start to decline and true Destreza prevail until the begining of the XVIII century.

The “Verdadera Destreza” was created by Jeromino Carranza and developed by Pacheco de Nárvaez although there are many other fencing masters and many Spanish fencing manuals. That is a nice and elegant style of fencing as the fencers seem to dance when they fight. The techniques are very subtle and the movements small focusing on the opponent's face and chest. The Common Destreza's school was similar to the Italian fencing schools, but it had its own characteristics and techniques.

Examples of what students will learn over this three day intensive course:

  • Spanish footwork (Spanish terms)
  • Techniques as they were used according to the masters Pacheco de Nárvaez, Lorenz de Rada (True Destreza) and Manuel Cruzado y Peralta (Common Destreza)
  • Adaptation of those techniques to Stage Combat purposes
  • choreography
  • scene work
